Research Activities
Energy and the environment are among the concentrated areas of our research activities. In the energy sector, we cover electric power and gas sub-sectors, while we have access to a number of professionals in the oil sub-sector. Our research activities in the environmental area are mostly related to energy, covering issues such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, etc. Mr Teruhiko Tsumura, who has worked in the energy sector for approximately 10 years, is in charge of the areas of energy and the environment. As a consultant working for an engineering firm in Tokyo, he participated in a number of Japanese Government missions to study the feasibility of power and gas projects in more than 10 countries. The energy projects he was involved with included power generation (hydro, thermal and solar power) and distribution, gas pipeline and CNG projects. Between 1997 and 1999, he worked in Ukraine as an IT advisor to the Ministry of Power, developing management information systems related to the country's wholesale energy market. In the environmental area, he is familiar with environmental impact assessment studies. Between 1994 and 1996, he was engaged in an environmental impact study for a hydro pumped-storage project in India. In late 80s and early 90s, he was involved in several real estate development projects in the US and Southeast Asia, for which he supervised environmental studies as part of the project management. One of the key associates in the energy and environmental area is Mr Michael Prior. He is an energy economist and an author of a number of publications from professional organizations. He also deals with energy policy and energy-related environmental issues. He has been involved in the energy sector for nearly 30 years, and he has worked for the World Bank, OECD, SIDA and IEA. He was Director of the Stockholm Environmental Institute at York between 1991 and 1993 and Director of the Energy Restructuring Group in Poland in 1996 and 1997. He has worked also on industrial restructuring in the energy sector in Estonian, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria. He has advised private sector clients mainly on fuel supply issues both in terms of specific projects and business acquisition and on wider strategic matters. He has considerable experience in various aspects of (1) the development and use of fossil fuels, in particular gas and coal, (2) energy planning and forecasting, and (3) environmental implications of energy. Another key associate in the area concerned is Mr John Conway. He is managing director of John Conway Associates Ltd, which is a group of specialists many of whom formerly worked in senior positions in British Gas and offshoot companies. He and his associates are able to offer specialist expertise in the fields of energy strategy, gas engineering and human resource management. His experience in the gas sector, which spans 30 years during a period of great change, is a significant asset for us in providing consulting services in regions where gas industries are changing dramatically due to deregulation. At a high management level, he has been involved in international human resource management and development, change process in an international business unit, and market development. We have an extensive network of professionals in the energy and environment sectors, including engineers in all major areas. We cover all types of consultancy services in the energy and environment sectors, from policy and sector analysis to design work. The issues and areas we cover include the following:
